Throwdown in O-Town

“You can either stay here and win $12 grand of prizing or go home and play X-Box,” boomed the voice of larger-than-life personality Jesse Fulton after the sixth rain delay threatened to cut short the 3rd Annual Icarus Throwdown in O-Town. The skies were angry this day my friend, decks were waterlogged, grip turned smooth, but the morale of smelly groms will never falter. On this day the spirit of skateboarding prevailed.

The scene was set and the Orangeville Skatepark resembled a big time stadium event. The double-decker Oakley bus was on-hand housing the VIP’s, PUSH.ca and Red Star banners decorated the bleachers, Nissan had trucks for lease littering the grounds, Red Bull was on-hand to amp the kids with drinks, beats from DJ Mensa on the Sugga, and as many Red Bull skateboarding stickers as their greedy little hands could swipe. Icarus owner Fulton was on the mic and sizzling burgers were on the ‘Q.

Junior World Championships

Headlined by Olympian Palmer Taylor (Collingwood, ON) and Canada~Snowboard Team member Derek Livingston (Aurora, ON), Canada will send a delegation of 24 of its best junior riders to compete at the 2010 FIS World Snowboard/Freestyle Ski Junior Championships in Wanaka, New Zealand, from August 21st-August 31st, 2010.

Amongst the Top Canadians entered in the competition, Palmer Taylor is Canada’s top hope for excellent results. Taylor, the reigning Canadian Champion in Women’s Halfpipe, represented Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, BC. Taylor also rides for Team Icarus in Ontario.

Derek Livingston, also riding for Team Icarus and member of Canada~Snowboard National Team, will lead the Men’s freestylers competing in both Slopestyle and Halfpipe. Livingston has four FIS World Cup starts to his credit.

CHECKING IN WITH HARRISON GRAY

Young up and coming Canadian Harry Gray had a gnarlier year than most, sustaining two season-ender injuries in a single winter. First, he broke his back, and right as he got back to the snow, he busted his knee. But even so, Harry’s outlook is remarkably positive and good humored (as usual) and he is currently coming back from both injuries to ride all summer at Whistler. He’s been laying low the last couple days, recouping from surgery earlier this week, so I chatted with him via ichat. Here’s what he had to say about getting busted up, hanging on the couch, and being pretty damn famous in Australia.

Palmer Taylor: No Expectations

Palmer Taylor eked out a number of experienced, established and talented snowboarders to earn her spot on the Canadian Olympic Snowboard Team competing in the halfpipe in Vancouver. At the ripe old age of 17 Palmer has already been snowboarding for 10 years. Cutting her teeth at Blue Mountain after her family moved to Collingwood from Welland, Ontario, she was on skis as soon as she could walk and ski racing not long after. A very busy senior at Collingwood Collegiate Institute, Palmer had to sacrifice a bit of her lunch hour to complete this interview. Considering her success I would say that time management is certainly one of her many skills.

On Thursday February the 4th a couple of fists full of Shreducation athletes along with Coaches Nick Marshall, Kevin Konings, and Brad Gauley headed off on a 7 hour journey to Mount Tremblant where on Saturday the first stop of the You Look Good Riders Cup was taking place.

They arrived late Thursday evening and decided to grab a late dinner, then it was off to bed for some well needed rest in order to get up early Friday morning to get there runs dialed for the contest. The feedback about the park wasn’t great, the jumps where small and the take offs where very flat but with word coming in the afternoon that they would be fixed that night before the contest, peoples spirits where lifted.

Friday evening was also a mellow one, mostly everyone decided to hit the pool and hot tub before dinner and after dinner it was t.v. then bed.

Saturday morning came and they awoke to sunny skies and frigged temperatures but it didn’t faze any of the kids, They were pumped up and ready to ride.

James Devitt came flying right out of the start gate and qualified himself 1st overall for the finals in the Grom Boys category.

Quincy Korte-King also was throwing down the goods in the Amateur Female category along with Liz Baines.
In the Renegade Boys Category Taylor Watling and Mac Smyth managed to land there way into the finals as well as Harrison Gray, Joel Dalacker and Kevin Konings in the Men’s Open Division.

In the finals James Devitt continued one upping himself with every run he did throwing down a floaty front 3 on the first jump to 50-50 on the canon box fallowed by a back 5 on the 3rd jump solidifying himself first Place overall in Grom Boys.

Mac Smyth fought hard to land his runs clean in the finals but just couldn’t manage to keep things as clean as he would have liked. Taylor Watling who seemed to be off his game a bit all day, maybe he was thinking about his brother Cooper who managed to fall weirdly the day before and break his shoulder, managed to clear his head and put down a solid run to squeak his way onto the podium with a 3rd place overall in the Renegade category.

Liz Baines was putting her body on the line in the Woman’s Amateur finals but it all seemed to pay off landing her a spot on the podium with a 3rd place just behind Quincy Korte-King who for the 3rd year in a row landed herself a 1st place topping off the Amateur Category.

When it came down to the Men’s Open division, our boys fought hard but Joel Dalacker, Harrison Gray or Kevin Konings couldn’t seem to put down a solid run to make it onto the podium, maybe next time boys.

Honorable mention goes out to Diane Rudge for her 1st place finish in the Woman’s Open Division, Diane is a former Shreducation Athlete.

The next stop of the You Look Good Riders Cup is at Mount St Louis on February 20th.
